Steve McGuire, Chief Executive Officer

As Essentia grows, one of the key principles of our organisation will always be the commitment to play a part in the local communities in which we operate. Our colleagues in Essentia who work directly for Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust have just won a Bronze award in the Apprenticeship Of The Year category at this year’s Learning Awards. These prestigious awards are the Learning and Development sector’s annual celebration of outstanding achievement, best practice and excellence in corporate learning and performance.

The Essentia team was up against many large global organisations in the apprenticeship category, so just being shortlisted was a significant achievement in itself.

Set up in 2012, the Essentia apprenticeship programme offers entry-level employment to young people in the local community. The success of the programme is clear from the number of apprentices who transfer into permanent employment with us; in its second year, 12 out of 13 apprentices secured full-time jobs. This year the scheme has expanded to 25 apprentices. I am proud that we have been able to give opportunities to local young people, and just as proud of the brilliant former apprentices we have now employed at Guy’s and St Thomas’.

Essentia is about three things. It’s about supporting our clients, whether they be at Guy’s and St Thomas’ or elsewhere. It’s about our people. And it’s about creating a positive social impact. Our connection to our local communities will remain strong and as we grow, we will find the best way to sustain this. As a starting point, we have already committed to contributing a percentage of our profits to The Essentia Academy, which runs the Essentia apprenticeship scheme as well as training programmes for staff. When I see the pride our apprentices take in their work and their sheer delight at winning the award last week, I know we are on the right track.
